Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice

Showcasing the power of product promo filming at FWstudios with producer, Aditi Srivastava

One of the first few projects I got my hands dirty with (quite literally) was the FWstudios product filming project. It started out as a way for the team to hone our technical skills and expand the studio portfolio. After realising this could be a great opportunity to reach out to brands who’d be interested in sending us their products for a promo in return, it then evolved into a full-fledged collaboration between FW and some really cool local businesses.

After contacting various brands on their socials, we received cookies that tasted just as good as they looked from Gardner’s Cookies, some gorgeous makeup essentials from ST Essentials, candles that smell like heaven from Tribal Unicorn and a host of magical trinkets from House of Spells. We couldn’t have asked for a better the mix of products!

ST Essentials makeup, Tribal Unicorn candles and Gardner’s Cookies all feature in our product promo filming.

The next step was to decide what the set up for each of these products would look like. Not going to lie, product videography is a tricky business. You have to find ways to showcase the product in the best light (literally and figuratively).and make sure each product represents its brand identity, while also conveying its unique elements.

As a first team effort, it was a great experience. If I was the heart of this project, Liam and Norbert were the brains. Liam is our very own technical assistant and Norbert, the Mac to his Dennis, our DOP. I conceptualised, Norbert visualised and Liam executed - the perfect trio! Not only did we learn a lot about cameras, sliders and C-stands, we learnt  about the joys of working with glitter, bubbles and soil.

Lighting was particularly key.. We used soft boxes, cookie cutters, reflectors etc., depending on the type of effect we wanted to achieve and while on some days it took us a while to get it right, with each consecutive shoot, we got more practised.

All in all, the entire experience was exactly what we aimed for - fun, practical and creative! All of the brands we collaborated with have been super pleased with the results and have shared them across their own socials.

The real bonus at the end? We got to eat the scrummy cookies and keep the lovely candles after filming a win-win-win for everyone.
